The Great Search For Cheap Solar Cells Online At In Stores

The solar cells are the workhorse of the solar panel. They are the units which produce usable electricity from sunlight. Usually solar cells are placed in groups in a solar panel. There are two reasons for this, the first is that it takes quite a few cells to produce a reasonable amount of electricity and second is that they are usually fragile and easily damaged. The panel helps protect a solar cell from damage of all sorts. The biggest problem to finding cheap solar cells is finding them in sufficient quantities to be useful and also finding them in good condition.

Used cells can be found online and many people think of this alternative before any other. While it is true that some online auction sites may offer these cells cheaply at times, they may be hard to find in the right quantities and sizes for the project. In addition since they are used they usually have sustained some damage as well. It may be hard to determine from photos or descriptions just how much damage they have sustained until they arrive at the door.

Another option is buying the cells from a wholesaler or discount supply company. Though the prices may be higher than those sold by individuals on auction sites they could well be more reliable as to quality and will usually be packed appropriately to survive the rigors of shipping. This can be an option if the purchaser is willing to do a lot more shopping around.

Solar power is also used for mobile construction signs that may be set up in rural areas. Many state or county crews set these out regularly. However state and local standards of safety are far more rigorous than those of the average home owner and solar panels or cells may be discarded as unsafe when they sustain even minor damage. These cells may be available to purchase or they may even be thrown away. It will take some legwork to find the right people to ask and channels to go through to try and recover these cells.

Places such as local hardware stores or even electronic suppliers may also carry a small number of solar cells. This could solve the problem for a person repairing only a cell or two that might have been damaged but may not help the person building their own solar panel. The advantage to buying from a retailer is that if the cells are damaged they can be returned and the buyer can usually inspect them prior to purchase.

In a perfect world no one would need to accept a less than perfect cell however, with the high cost of solar panels and parts, damaged cells could well be an alternative. The panels hold the cells carefully to help them avoid damage in place but loose cells can easily sustain damage and may be easier to find than the average shopper may expect. A small chip off an edge might only affect the efficiency of a panel in a very minor way.

When searching for inexpensive alternatives to expensive manufactured panels or simply for a replacement cell for an existing solar panel it pays to be persistent. Check auctions online frequently because they may be sold very quickly when they appear. Check the hardware stores and ask the construction managers of road crews about what they do with damaged cells. Investigate discounts and sales offered by solar wholesalers and eventually the right size cell at the right price will usually appear.
